Mugged
Bar Harbor

Last night, about a block away from home, a young black male, approximately 16 years old, stole my iPad from my hands and ran.

I called 911, and there was a police car there in a startlingly short time. We spent about a half hour cruising the neighborhood, trying to spot the kid. Didn't. The cop filled out a report, and said that detectives would call me. I don't hold out much hope for any further developments, but we'll see.

Thus ends my approximately 20-year streak of "not being a crime victim in Dorchester". Pretty good run, all told. Still kinda shocky, though...

I recently read an interesting story about NYPD using an iPhone and FindMyPhone to perform a merry little police chase. They followed a subway train until the stolen iPhone "got off" the train. They stopped a fellow who met the description.

He said "I don't have an iPhone".

But they made his back pocket ring by calling the victims number...

Dang. Sorry to hear it. Annoying as it is, at least it was just a boring old personal possession and nothing more violent happened. And Apple has made it easier to remotely wipe the device and to restore and reinstall data to a new device, at least in comparison to losing a laptop a decade ago the same way.

Yikes! Glad you are ok.

Yikes. Glad you're alright!

Can I recommend Prey if/when you replace your iDevices?

My nephew lost his phone last winter, so I made sure to get a phone/tablet locator program (Outlook).

sorry to hear about the shock, but glad you are ok

Joining my voice to others to say: shit, I'm glad you weren't hurt, dude, but I'm sorry that happened.

Sorry to read about your mugging. Like others, glad you are otherwise unharmed.

Hugs. I'm so sorry. I'm sure you remember my mugging, so I won't bore you with it, but I will say the shocky lasts a few days at minimum.

With luck they'll find him.

Oh, no! I, too, have been mugged in Dorchester, as you know. It affected me for weeks. How are you doing?

Oh no! I hope it is not too annoying to reset your passwords and such.

Like all the others have said: yikes, bummer, glad you're OK. Twenty years was a good run, but not one that's ever fun to break.

I'm sorry to hear it, but glad you are otherwise unhurt.

Oh, man. I'm so sorry. Glad you were unhurt.

Thanks.

(Um, do I know you under some other name? Feel free to respond privately.)

Oh, god - I'm so sorry this happened to you, and so glad that at least it wasn't worse...

Ugh. Sucktastic. First, glad that it was just a snatch and run and you were neither threatened nor harmed.

There have been a bunch of incidents like this -- mostly on mass transit. People absorbed in their e-media (iPad, iPod, iPhone, Kindle, etc.) find it rudely ripped away. It's prevalent enough that the media has a cutesy term for it -- "Apple Picking".

I'd love to live in a world in which anyone who wanted to could walk along involved in whatever distraction pleased them... but I don't think we do.
