"How can you ever possibly think that 'Lost' will end in a satisfying way?"

I'm not surprised. But I am saddened.

???

Unpack a little, please?

Sorry.

Have the writers painted themselves into enough of a corner that having a giant meteor splash down and kill everyone is the only way out?

Not yet. But they show every sign of heading in that general direction.

Not that that would count as a *satisfying* ending...

What else is there? Television has remarkably few examples of shows with a long plot-arc, which end at a defined time (unless that defined time is a season, of which "24" is a good recent example).

Television milks the cow until it stops liking the flavor, and then shoots the damned thing. (And, pushing the metaphor, sells warmed-over hamburger to syndicates and other venues.) (Is TV-Land a place of hooves and glue? LOL)

Yes, but the early publicity for Lost *claimed* that they were doing exactly that. That they had learned from the negative example of (among others) X-Files, and wouldn't make the same mistakes. As near as I can tell, they were flat-out lying.

This surprises you?

True. I suspect that fandom is a tad spoiled by Babylon 5, which claimed it was going to do exactly that and more or less did. There were a fair number of unforeseen twists in the road due to external forces, but all the evidence indicates that the series came out, at least in rough shape, as it was intended.

That was a damned satisfying experience to live through -- knowing that the story is actually *going* somewhere makes the whole thing a lot more interesting, at least to me. So having the prospect of that dangled in front of us, and then snatched away, is particularly irritating...
